What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging. These lines and creases in the skin are most likely to form on skin that's often exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, hands and forearms. Pollutants and smoking also speed the aging process. Using sunscreen every day and quitting smoking help prevent some wrinkling.

If your wrinkles bother you, many options are available to help smooth them or make them less visible. These include medicines, skin-resurfacing techniques, fillers and surgery.

Symptons

Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin. Some wrinkles become deep and may be especially noticeable around the forehead, eyes, mouth and neck.

Causes

Slow skin cell production, thinning skin layers and a lack of collagen proteins causes wrinkles to form on your skin.

Collagen is a protein within your body that gives your skin structure. It provides stretchiness or elasticity so you can move easily. Your skin is similar to a rubber band. If that rubber band stretches or moves too much, the rubber band becomes loose and loses its ability to snap back to its normal size and shape. When your body’s cells age, their ability to produce proteins slows down. This makes it more difficult for your rubber band to snap back to its original shape, which causes wrinkles.

Wrinkles are caused by several factors — some you can control, others you can't:

  • Age: With aging, the skin naturally becomes less elastic and drier, with less fat and collagen in the deeper layers. This results in the lines and creases typical of wrinkling. It also causes loose, saggy skin.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation: Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources speeds the skin's aging process, especially in people who tend to sunburn easily. It breaks down the elastin fibers and collagen in skin. Without these supportive connective tissues, the skin loses strength and flexibility.

  • Smoking and pollution: Smoking and air pollutants speed the aging process.

  • Repeated facial expressions: Facial movements and expressions lead to fine lines and wrinkles. For example, every time you squint, smile and frown, tiny grooves form beneath the surface of the skin. As skin ages, it loses its flexibility and no longer springs back. These grooves then become facial features.

  • Family history: The genes you inherit play a big part in the look and feel of your skin.

Prevention

Here are some tips for slowing the effects of sun exposure and other causes of wrinkles:

  • Protect your skin from UV radiation: Avoid indoor tanning and limit the time you spend in the sun, especially midday. When you're in the sun, wear sun-protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses. Also, use sunscreen every day year-round. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Apply sunscreen generously. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

  • Don't smoke: Even if you've smoked for years or smoke heavily, you can still improve your skin and prevent wrinkles by quitting smoking.

  • Eat healthy: There is some evidence that certain vitamins in your diet help protect the skin. More study is needed on the role of nutrition in preventing wrinkles, but it's good to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At what age do I start getting wrinkles?

As your body ages, you’ll notice fine lines start to appear on your body. This can start after age 25. The most common age group for people who look for wrinkle treatment is between ages 40 to 55. Wrinkles become more prominent after age 65.

  • When to see a specialist?

If you're concerned about how your skin looks, see a doctor or a dermatologist who specializes in the skin. Our skin therapists can assess your skin, help you create a skin care plan and discuss wrinkle treatments. Book our Free Beauty Coach

  • Does makeup cause wrinkles?

If you don’t remove makeup, it can clog your pores, which restricts your body’s ability to produce collagen proteins. This could cause premature aging and wrinkles if you never remove your makeup. It’s important to remove makeup at the end of the day with a cleanser to make sure your pores are clean to prevent wrinkles. If you forget to take off your makeup a few times before you go to bed, it’s OK, but habitually leaving makeup on can damage your skin by clogging your pores.

  • Does caffeine cause wrinkles?

While research is still ongoing to understand more about how caffeine — including coffee — affects your skin, caffeine has some benefits to your skincare routine that are short term. This means that caffeine can temporarily change the appearance of wrinkles, but long-term use of caffeine products doesn’t cure wrinkles. Caffeine is an antioxidant, which can protect your skin from elements that damage the collagen in your skin that causes wrinkles.

  • Do I need many treatments to get rid of wrinkles

Some wrinkle treatments are permanent while others need multiple sessions to maintain your results. Our skin therapists will discuss options to help you meet your goals for treatment and help you choose the right treatment for your skin.

  • What foods and drinks help reduce wrinkles?

The nutrients you eat and drink help your skin stay healthy. Keeping your skin healthy prevents wrinkles. Add the following to your well-balanced diet to keep your skin healthy and minimize wrinkles:

    • Water
    • Vitamins A, B3, B5, B7, C and E
    • Protein (poultry, fish, eggs and lean meats).

While they may be tempting and delicious, avoid eating foods that are high in fat and sugar as they could damage collagen in your skin.

  • What is the difference between fine lines and wrinkles?

    • Fine lines are the start of wrinkles and look like small creases on your skin. They're closer to the surface of your skin, whereas wrinkles are deeper into your skin. You’ll notice fine lines on your face where you make repetitive movements, like around your eyes and your mouth when you smile or squint. Fine lines met with age and gravity form wrinkles.
    • Wrinkles are deeper creases or folds within your skin that can form anywhere on your body.
